Folder Actions

How folder actions work

Folder actions are small programs, or scripts, written in the scripting language AppleScript. These programs are triggered whenever there is a change in contents of a folder. Adding an item to an open folder window, for example, can trigger a folder action because the contents of the folder's window are updated visibly. Adding an item to a closed folder, on the other hand, does not trigger a folder action&endash;because the folder is closed, its contents do not need to be updated on your screen. Folder actions can apply to folders within a folder. Again, these actions are triggered only when an event causes a visible change on your screen. So, adding an item to a folder in a window's list view only triggers a folder action if that folder's disclosing triangle is turned downward&endash;that is, if the contents of the folder are also visible.

The Folder Actions extension

The Folder Actions extension, located in the Extensions folder (inside the System Folder), is a special application written to run folder actions scripts. It must be in the Extensions folder and turned on for folder actions to be available.

If folder actions are not working:

Make sure that the Folder Actions extension is turned on in the

Extensions Manager.

Folder Action Scripts folder

Folder action scripts can be stored and run from anywhere on your local disks. However, your computer has a special folder for scripts that you may want to use. This folder, called Folder Action Scripts, is located in the Scripts folder (inside the System Folder). The sample folder action scripts that come with the Mac OS are stored in the Folder Action Scripts folder.

Folder Actions and SiteCam

Folder action scripts can be triggered by SiteCam creating a new movie or image file. Sample folder action scripts are provided. These scripts can be found in the "Extras" folder in the SiteCam folder.
